COMPUTER CATASTROPHE Late in the evening last Monday, my computer gave a few pathetic beeps and died. Attempts at resuscitation failed, and I was forced to switch to using a rather old and very under-powered notebook computer in order to do anything. Fortunately, I had a reasonably recent backup of all the data from my main computer. Unfortunately, I didn't have all the programs I needed installed on the notebook, and - more to the point - I didn't have the details needed to configure the programs in order to get them to work in the way I want them to. This showed up a major flaw in my backup strategy! Previously, whenever I have set up a new computer, I have had the old computer sitting next to it on the desk so I've been able to just duplicate all the settings. But not this time. It took me several days to get things set up right so I can deal with my email. I then had a huge backlog waiting for me - I cleared it all, but if anybody sent any email to me personally, or to feedback, and did not get a reply then please resend it. I only got the program that allows me to upload new pages to the ibgames web site set up properly yesterday - before that, I didn't know if I would be able to publish the Fed II Star today. The good news is that my dead computer is still under warranty and has gone back to the manufacturers to be revived. I don't know how long that will take, or if it will come back with all its data intact, but I have hopes. |
