REAL LIFE NEWS: WHY CURRY IS GOOD FOR YOUEating curry seems to boost brain power in elderly people, and could help stave off Alzheimer's disease, according to scientists at the National University of Singapore. The benefit seems to come from one of the spices used in a good curry: turmeric, also called yellow ginger or haldi, a bright yellow spice made from the root of a plant. Turmeric contains an antioxidant called curcumin, and reports have suggested that it inhibits the build up of plaques in the brains of people with Alzheimer's. Tz-Pin Ng and his team looked at the curry-eating habits of 1010 Asian people unaffected by the disease and aged between 60 and 93, and compared their performance in a standard cognitive function test. People who ate curry occasionally often had better results than those that had it rarely or never. The interesting thing is that the study seems to show that you don't have to eat curry every day to get this effect - once every couple of months seems to do the trick.
