EVENTS AND EVENTS AND EVENTS

by Hazed

Words that sound the same but means something different are very confusing. Take the word "event". In Fed DataSpace, it means three completely different things. If you're having a conversation with somebody about events, and they think you're talking about one kind of event, and you think you're talking about another kind of event, a complete communications breakdown can ensue.

Here's the three different kinds of events in Fed2:

  • An exchange event is something that happens on a planet to affect the price or the stockpile of a commodity, such as a warehouse fire or a factory explosion, a new invention or a passing fad, an auction of bankrupt stock or a temporary tax raise. Type 'DI EVENTS' to see what's happened in the current game session; 'REPORT EVENTS' will give you updates whenever a new event occurs and 'CANCEL EVENTS' switches them off again.
  • An event can also be the games that are held regularly in Fed2 to entertain and amuse you. Event hosts run contests that you can compete in or watch, or hold parties you can attend, or lessons in role-playing. See what events we have planned, and when, by reading the event calendar.
  • Events are what make fun things happen on a planet - they are collections of scripts that run when a player does something to trigger the event, such as walk into a room or pick up an object. Events instructs the game to carry out certain actions like moving the player to a different room or sending a message to everybody in the room. Events make the monorail on Earth work, let you talk to Diesel, provide the custom food and drink in all the Sol bars, and drive the Magellan Society Treasure Hunt puzzle. Engineers will be able to add events to their planets once we've finished modifying and testing the tools.

So there's three completely different things that all have the same name. Unless we can come up with synonyms for two of these things, we're going to continue to be confused!
