REAL LIFE NEWS: CONTRACT KILLER SPAMby HazedScammers who use spam mail to try to exhort money from people have come up with a new twist. They are now pretending to be professional hit men in a bid to frighten victims into handing over large sums of money. The spam emails claim that you are being stalked by a hired assassin, but that the killer will call off the contract on your life if he is paid $80,000. You are told to send an up-front payment of $20,000 and in return you'll receive evidence of the contract to kill. The emails include a warning not to contact the police: "Do not contact the police or FBI or try to send a copy of this to them, because if you do i will know, and might be pushed to do what i have being paid to do, beside, this is the first time I turned out to be a betrayer in my job." A very nasty threat, but of course it is all complete rubbish - just one more fiendish trick that con-men are using to try to scam their victims. The emails are apparently being sent to well-off professionals in the US and began circulating about a week ago. So far, there's no evidence that anybody has fallen for the ruse, but then it's hardly something you would want to boast about... |
