ON THE WEB: MARTIAN MOVIESby HazedFancy hang-gliding over the surface of Mars? Two new animations released by NASA will let you see what it would be like to swoop over the terrain that the two Martian rovers are currently exploring. The animations were created using pictures taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which used its HiRise camera to take images of the same site from different angles over several orbits, thus providing the 3D mapping data needed to animate a flypast over the surface of Mars. The extremely detailed movies show the geology of the Columbia Hills, which are being explored by Spirit, and Victoria Crater, which is Opportunity's current base.
