HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO USby HazedJanuary marks the twentieth birthday of the multi-player game Federation 2. It was in January 1988 that the game first opened its doors to the general public, on the UK network Compunet. The game was very different, then, from the one we know today: you couldn't do very much to begin with, the messages the game sent were much more computer-y, and the parser which interpreted the commands you typed was primitive. But it had the essence of the game that we play today. Fed was not the first MUD-style game, but it may very well be one of the oldest that still survives - a remarkable testament to the genius of Our Illustrious Leader, Bella, who created the universe that is Fed DataSpace. You can read about the early days of Fed in the archive. There's an article about Fed's First Year, as well as the news bulletins that were published at the time. Yes, they were written by me, too! I'm as much of a survivor as the game itself. Here's to another twenty years. |
