FROM THE POSTBAG: COPYRIGHT PART 1by HazedI had an email from a Financier who was diligently working on her planet, but was wondering about copyright. "Who," she asked, "owns my planet?" The answer, I told her, is "You do." If you create the planet yourself, and write all the descriptions, then the text that makes up the planet is your intellectual property. By submitting it to us to link into the game, you give us permission to add it to the game so that other players can see it, and to use some of it in promotional materials if we want, but it is still your work, owned by you, and you can use the text in any way you see fit outside of Fed2. This doesn't apply if you use one of our stock planets, of course. They belong to us. After all, I wrote them myself and I wouldn't be very pleased if somebody else started to claim ownership. But if you write an original planet, if you've done the creative work, if the words people see on the screen came from your brain - then the planet is yours. |
