REAL LIFE NEWS: KIMCHI... IN... SPACE...by HazedSouth Korean scientists have come up with a specially engineered version of kimshi, the nation's favorite dish, which will be sent into space along with the country's first astonaut. Ko San, a 30-year-old computer science engineer, will be the country's first astronaut to travel into space on a Russian-made Soyuz rocket in early April. He will fly to the International Space Station and stay there for up to eight days conducting various experiments. And he will be taking kimchi with him. The dish which consists of pickled vegetables - usually cabbage - which has fermented, usually contains lactic acid bacteria for fermentation, but because bacteria have been shown to become more virulent in space, it could threaten the health of the astronauts, so this special space kimchi is certified bacteria-free. Along with the kimchi, the mission will take instant noodles, cinnamon tea and uncooked organic food, all developed by the state-run food research body. |
