REAL LIFE NEWS: MARS MISSIONSby HazedPhew. For a moment, it looked like the plucky little rovers that could were going to be axed. NASA, desperately short of funds, proposed shutting down Spirit and Opportunity, which (I almost want to say who!) have been trundling across the surface of Mars for far, far longer than they were expected to last, and sending back incredible pictures and invaluable information. Thankfully, they reversed the decision pretty rapidly. These two have certainly been the stars of the whole set of Martian robots, some of which have succeeded but many of which have failed miserably. In Fed, go scout the locations south of the Mars spaceport to see my personal tribute to Mars missions of the past, and for a gallery of Martian robots in real life, take a look at this amazing collection at http://io9.com/372034/the-triumphant-journeys-of-martian-robots. |
