REAL LIFE NEWS: THE DANGERS OF TOXIC SOCKSby HazedToxic socks doesn't mean what you think it means. We're not talking about the kind of pong emanating from the footwear of sweaty teenage boys. Quite the opposite: the toxic socks in this story were designed to fight cheesy foot odor. Nanoparticle silver has become an extremely popular ingredient in a whole range of products from socks to bandages, because of its antibacterial and odor-fighting properties. But now scientists are starting to worry about possible environmental and health consequences of nanosilver. A report due to be given to the American Chemical Society's national meeting says that ordinary laundering can wash off substantial amounts of nanosilver particles from socks impregnated with the material. They could then enter the water system where they might have unwanted effects on aquatic organisms living in the water - and possibly humans, too. Yikes!
