ON THE WEB: THE LONGEST RUNNING SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENTS

You might think watching paint dry is boring, but what about watching drops of pitch - which drip about once every eight years?

This is just one of the many experiments running around the world which have been designed to take a very, very long time. There's a clock that has run for almost 150 years without having to be wound up, an electric bell that has continued to sound for over 170 years, and the human tissue that has been growing, multiplying and spreading to labs everywhere for 50 years.

Some of the experiments are about people - tracking subjects throughout their lives.
