REAL LIFE NEWS: PRETTY WOMEN MAKE MEN STUPID

Another study that just confirms what we already know: men who talk to an attractive womon become stupider than if they talk to a woman they don't fancy.

Researchers at Radboud University in The Netherlands found that spending just a few minutes in the company of a woman they find attractive makes men perform less well in tests designed to measure brain function.

Now, before you start to think obvious thoughts about all the blood rushing from their head to their nether regions, the scientists have a slightly less saucy explanation: they think that men use so much of their brain function trying to impress beautiful women, they don't have any cognitive resources left for anything else.

Women, on the other hand, are not affected by chatting to a handsome man.

The researchers decided to carry out this study after one of them was so involved in trying to impress a woman he had never met before, that when asked where he lived he couldn't remember his own address.

They wanted to see if all men were affected in this way, so they recruited 40 male students (all heterosexual) and gave them a standard memory test where they had to identify repeats in a stream of letters. Then the volunteers spent seven minutes chatting to male or female members of the research team, before repeating the test.

The men turned out to be slower and less accurate after chatting to the women, and the more attractive they found them, the worse their score.

The researchers said, "We conclude men's cognitive functioning may temporarily decline after an interaction with an attractive woman."

Psychologist Dr George Fieldman, a member of the British Psychological Society, said the findings reflect the fact that men are programmed to think about ways to pass on their genes. "When a man meets a pretty woman, he is what we call 'reproductively focused'.

"But a woman also looks for signs of other attributes, such as wealth, youth and kindness. Just the look of the man would be unlikely to have the same effect."
