REAL LIFE NEWS: BOLDLY STAYING
by Hazed
A new mission to the International Space Station will see two astronauts staying on board for a whole year, in order to check out the effects of weightlessness.
NASA and Roscosmos have picked Scott Kelly and Mikahail Kornienko, who have previously each logged over 170 days in space, to be the guinea pigs for this long-term research. They will spend two years training for the mission and then head off to the ISS in 2015.
Scientists already know quite a bit about the side-effects of micro-gravity by studying the ISS crew members. Now seeing what happens over the course of a full year spent on the station will add to that knowledge, and help with planning for future missions to the moon, to an asteroid, and eventually to Mars.
