REAL LIFE NEWS: DEVELOPER OUTSOURCES HIS OWN JOB SO HE CAN SLACK OFF AT WORK
by Hazed
A US company has just discovered that one of its top employees had outsourced his job to a Chinese subcontracter so he could spend all his time surfing the net, watching cat videos on YouTube, and checking out EBay.
The company contracted Verizon to set up a basic system to let staff log on from home so they could do tele-working. But the traffic logs showed that somebody was logging on regularly from Shenyang in China. The interloper was using the firm’s top programmer’s credentials.
They assumed the overseas log ons were being made by a hacker, and called in Verizon to investigate. The security investigators were given permission to study the programmer’s computer habits, and they discovered that he had hired a software consultancy in Shenyang to do his programming work for him. He’d FedExed them his authentication token so they could log into his account. He was paying them one fifth of his salary to do his job, so he could spend his time goofing off.
But that’s not all. They also found that this enterprising programmer had actually taken jobs with other firms and had outsourced that work too, so he was netting thousands of dollars in profit from all the wage checks he received.
Needless to say, he’s not employed at the company any more!
