REAL LIFE NEWS: THE HOLLOW MOUNTAIN

The Matterhorn is an iconic mountain in Europe’s Alps, on the border between Switzerland and Italy. It’s one of the highest in the range, and was one of the last great Alpine peaks to be climbed.
But its days are numbered because scientists report it could collapse at any moment.
It turns out that the mountain is hollow. Geologists have discovered evidence that there is a vast hollow chamber in the mountain’s heart which makes it dangerously unstable. “The issue is not if it will collapse, but when. It could happen in a thousand years, or it could happen next week,” warns study author Jean-Manu Torthézy.
The surrounding populations shouldn’t panic, though, because rather than falling onto their heads, the mountain will just collapse in on itself. Current computer models show that it will reduce from its current height of 4.478 metres to a rounded dome just 2,120 meters high.
When this happens, the tourist trade is going to hit hard.
