As standards of living rise and medical abilities improve, humans are living even longer. So what are the secrets for a long life?
The Worldcrunch website recently decided to find out. They looked at ten people who lived to over 100 years old to find out what those individuals ascribed their longevity to. The results are many and varied.
Foodstuffs recommended include bananas, quinoa, bacon and chocolate (1 kilogram a week – which is a health recommendation I can really go along with). Other substances credited are tea, port wine, smoking, pain killers and coca leaves.
Then there’s the non-ingestible activities supposed to have a positive effect. Reading the bible, recommends one woman who lived to 112. Sleeping well was the recipe of a 116 year old from Japan. Staying calm did the trick for another 116 year old from Ecuador. And my favourite was the woman from the UK who is about to turn 114. Her recommendation? Dancing!
