ROBOT OF THE WEEK: MILITARY FASHION MODEL
by Hazed
The Ministry of Defence in the UK has unveiled a new robot soldier that can run, sit and mimic the movement of its fleshy brethren. But it’s not intended for the battlefield, instead it’s going to be used to test protective suits and equipment.
The robot mannequin is called “Porton Man” (named after Porton Down, which is the MoD's bio-weapons establishment) and it’s been developed using Formula 1 technology. It is covered with more than 100 sensors which will record data during tests. It can raise its arms, march and kneel.
The hope is that by testing designs on robots like this, designers will be able to produce a new, lighter protective suit for military use.
