REAL LIFE NEWS: MEN REALLY ARE WIMPS
by Hazed
I always thought that men were big cry-babies, and now science proves it! Men feel more pain when they are recovering from surgery than women do, a study of more than 10,000 post-operative patients in Germany has shown.
The researchers interviewed male and female patients over the course of more than four years and found that men reported more pain than women after major surgery. Women, on the other hand, were more likely to report pain after smaller procedures such as a biopsy.
I knew it. Men are wimps. But wait a moment…
Other experts in pain management have cast doubt on this study. Dr Beverly Collett from the University Hospital of Leicester NHS Trust said, “The study titillates and makes you want to ask more questions, but doesn’t allow you to probe it. Which procedures were classed as major surgery? How old were they? That will have an effect on sex hormones. And pain will be dependent on the parts of the body being biopsied.”
She also pointed out that from early childhood the way boys and girls are told to deal with pain differs: boys are told to get up and be a man, while girls are comforted and kissed better. This also affects pain perception.
This is clearly an area that needs a lot more investigation.
