BLATANT PLUG: EXCELLENT TECHO THRILLER
by Hazed
Anyone who played Fed in the early days must remember what computer networks were like before the internet – Compunet and Micronet in the UK, GEnie, Compuserve and Prodigy in the US. Modems were oh so slow, telephone connections were unreliable and staying connected involved crossing a lot of fingers. But those were exciting times as we explored the possibilities that computer communications gave us.
Dial Up for Murder is a techo thriller set in that era, when cyber crime and the dark art of hacking were being invented. The hero is a hacker called Peter who sets up a new-fangled computer network and tries to attract paying subscribers.
A chance meeting with a shady customer soon has the young computer whizz raking in the dough. Yet before long, he finds himself sucked into a dangerous world, consorting with gangsters and running for his life. Will Peter live long enough to spend his criminal spoils?
Dial Up for Murder details Peter’s terrifying yet financially-lucrative descent into a dangerous world of real-life crime and ruthless 1980ís gangsters.
The book is written by Clem Chambers, who was part of that world; he ran his own network, OnLine, and he did the deals that got Fed running on the US networks, GEnie and then AOL. (For full disclosure I should say that Clem is currently my boss, and that I proofed and edited the book.)
Dial Up for Murder is an exciting read and you can buy it for the Kindle and in paperback through Amazon – links below. There’s a sequel called Log On for Crime which is also available now, and part three is in the works.
I thoroughly recommend it – it would make ideal Christmas reading!
