We learned recently that the colour and shape of the plate can influence the taste of food you eat [find link] and now Australian scientists have proved this effect extends to coffee, too.
The scientists wanted to know if our perception of the hot beverage would be influenced by the colour of the cup we drink from. Turns out, it does. Their experiments showed that white cups enhance the “intensity” of café latte drinks when compared to drinking coffee from a clear mug or a blue one. Specifically, white cups make coffee taste more bitter.
They think that the reason is not actually the colour white itself, but rather the way it makes the brownness of the coffee stand out, which we tend to associate with bitter flavours.
So if you like your coffee bitter, go for a white cup; if you prefer it sweeter then use a darker cup and you may be able to cut down on the sugar you add.
