REAL LIFE NEWS: DRONE FAILS TO DELIVER GOODS TO PRISONERS
by Hazed
For the first time, a drone has been used in an attempt to smuggle drugs into a British prison, but its mission ended in failure after it got caught up on the barbed wire fence.
Police were called to HMP Bedford in early March after reports that a small drone had been discovered alongside a package in the netting above a perimeter wall. A spokesman for Bedfordshire Police explained, “Both the device and the contents of the package are currently being examined, and investigations are on-going to identify the offender. We are working closely with the prison to investigate this incident.”
Guards spotted the drone caught on the wire and retrieved it. They found it was a quadrocopter with about 25 minutes flying time, and it contained a number of class-A drugs, several smartphones and a screwdriver.
Smuggling at the prison has long been a problem. Usually stuff is thrown over the walls so that criminals can pick it up later, but this high-tech solution means that British prisoners are starting to copy their counterparts in the US, where drones have been used to deliver contraband for years.
Of course, it’s possible that this wasn’t the first drone delivery to a British prison – but just the first one that got caught!
