REAL LIFE NEWS: GOOGLE TRANSLATE HELPS WOMAN GIVE BIRTH
by Hazed
Irish paramedics who were helping a pregnant woman to give birth by the roadside were stumped by the fact that she didn’t speak English – until they turned to Google Translate, which enabled them to communicate with her in her native Swahili, thus leading to a safe birth.
The ambulance drivers from Cork were transporting a pregnant Congolese woman to hospital when she went into labour last month. They were forced to stop the ambulance by the side of the road and deliver the baby. But the lack of a shared language made it hard to find out whether she needed to push, until one of them hit on the idea of using his smartphone to pull up Google Translate.
With communication restored, the paramedics were able to successfully deliver the baby – a girl.
