REAL LIFE NEWS: NEW HORIZONS SENDS MORE PLUTO IMAGES
by Hazed
I had to finalise the Fed2 Star early last week so I just missed being able to tell you about the new batch of pictures of Pluto that New Horizons sent back, in its continuing data dump.
The most spectacular is this picture of the surface of the planet looking like the skin of a snake. The image is of a mountainous region about 330 miles across, called the Tartarus Dorsa. It combines blue, red and infrared image data to provide an extended colour view. There’s also a great picture of Charon, Pluto’s largest moon, here.
You can see all of the latest pictures from New Horizons here.
You can also see a video simulating a view of what it would be like to fly over Charon, Pluto’s largest moon. It’s cobbled together from a whole lot of hi-res images received from New Horizons, stitched into a seamless video. Watch it here.
