REAL LIFE NEWS: LOOK, THERE GOES AN ASTEROID!
by Hazed
Next week we’re going to have a close encounter with an asteroid. But there’s no need to panic – it’s not going to hit us. But it may come close enough to be visible from Earth.
Asteroid 2013 TX68 will fly past on March 5. NASA researchers are still calculating its exact trajectory. Its most likely path will bring it to just over a million miles away from Earth, but it could spin a lot further out, up to 9 million miles, which will mean it’s too far to see even using a telescope.
But it’s possible – just possible – that it will come within 11,000 miles, making it easily visible with a telescope.
The asteroid was discovered just two years ago, and we don’t have much data on it, which is why there’s so much uncertainty about its exact trajectory.
If you miss seeing it this time, it’ll be back in 2017.
