REAL LIFE NEWS: THE POSITIVE SIDE OF POKEMON GO
by Hazed
The media has been full of stories about the dark side of the Pokemon Go craze (see Alan’s Winding Down last week and this week). There’s people turning up at inappropriate locations to look for the virtual creatures, such as hospital A&E departments, fire stations and private homes. There’s idiots walking into traffic or crashing cars while trying to catch one, which is just an extension of the way people turn off their brains when using a mobile phone (see last week’s story about deadly selfies).
But it’s not all bad. Pokemon Go is getting people out of their homes and into the fresh air, and encouraging them to talk to each other.
What’s more, businesses are taking advantage of the craze to attract new customers.
Here’s a neat example. A restaurant in London has set itself up as a Pokestop, and has seen a 26% rise in revenue as a result.
Maxwell’s Bar and Grill, in the central London area of Covent Garden, has placed lures around the restaurant and has introduced a special Pokemon-themed menu. They are also planning to host a ‘Pokemon Go Lure Party’.
Sounds like a neat marketing trick!
