ON THE WEB: WHEN A CAT AUTHORED A PHYSICS PAPER
by Hazed
Back in the 1970s, a physicist called Jack H Hetherington wrote a apper about the behaviour of atoms at various temperatures. Before submitting it he gave it a last read-through, and realised that although he was the sole author of the paper he’d been using the pronouns “we” and “us”.
Since he’d written the paper on a typewriter, this being the days before word processors and computers, he didn’t want to rewrite it – so instead he added a second author: his cat. Chester the cat used the pawname F.D.C. Willard and thus became a physicist.
