REAL LIFE NEWS: FEATURES ON PLUTO’S MOON CHARON NOW HAVE OFFICIAL NAMES

The New Horizons team has been using unofficial names to describe the many valleys, crevices and crates discovered on the surface of Charon, the moon of Pluto which the probe flew past in 2015. Now many of those names have been officially recognised.
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has approved a dozen of the names the team had been using. The names include many suggestions that the New Horizons team received from around the world and they honour the spirit of human exploration, honouring travellers, explorers and scientists, pioneering journeys, and mysterious destinations.
Some of the names that I particularly like: Argo Chasma, named after the ship sailed by Jason and the Argonauts; Kubrick Mons, after the director of 2001: A Space Odyssey (and many other films); and Nemo Crater, named for the captain of the submarine Nautilus in Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
