The Journal of Jonathon Lindey From the main part of the journal - Page 10
That evening I worked somewhat later than was my wont. I was still catching up with work that had accumulated while I was being followed, and I wanted to clear my desk before starting on the report the following morning. As I started to gather my things together to leave there was a distant clap of thunder. Pausing I cocked an ear to see if there were more, indicating that I should take an umbrella, but there were no more, so I finished and left the office without an umbrella. As I approached the street in which my lodgings were situated there seemed to be a lot of people out on the street. I asked a passer-by what was causing the excitement. "Gas explosion." he said laconically and hurried on. I too hurried, trying to suppress a sense of doom. As I turned the corner I saw that my forebodings were justified. Where my lodgings had stood a huge hole had been ripped in the row of houses. Wisps of smoke still rose from the resulting rubble, and there was a strong smell of gas in the air. I stood rooted to the spot for a few seconds and then backed away, my thoughts racing. Somehow or other I found myself back at the office. I slumped in my chair. Not for one minute did I believe the gas explosion was an accident. But what was I to say to the police, who would surely want to interview me about the explosion as well as the missing report. Murders? Explosions? Stolen reports? All because of an anomaly in the census data? Surely I would be taken for a mad man and locked up in Bedlam... It is 2am and all is quiet in the office as I write this part of my story. I had hoped that by doing so it would help organise my thoughts and let me summarise the facts. Instead I find myself even more confused and unable to make sense of the story. I know that there is something evil abroad in Washington. I know it is linked to the town of Crystal Falls in Rhode Island. What that link is I cannot fathom from the information yet available. I have the feeling that I will soon find out...
