The Soldier's Rest, Norwich, Connecticut, August 31st - contd.

Curiously enough, I felt much better than I had for some time. At last I was in with a chance of striking back instead of just being on the receiving end of their activities.

And so here I am, on the Connecticut-Rhode Island border. The last month has been spent travelling round other parts of New England, establishing my credentials. Tomorrow I set off for the town of Crystal Falls, and who knows what will befall me. I confess to some nervousness, but I feel that this was pre-ordained and whatever the outcome I will have done my best.

The ostler has just knocked on my door and has told me that the farrier has finished re-shoeing my horse, and so my preparations are now complete. I shall now retire to bed that I may face the morrow, and the culmination of my travels, rested and refreshed...
