ORIGINS OF THE MAGELLAN CUP RACEby RobiusWhile the origins of the Magellan Society are well documented in the Encyclopedia Galactica, there is little known about the origins of the Magellan Cup. As the current marshall and host of the race, I thought I would give readers a bit of insight into just how it actually came into being. In the first days of the formation of the Magellan Society, members often competed amongst themselves for the honor of finding the latest discovery. They would often race around the galaxy searching for unexplored planets, and return with the results of their find to the Society president. As time passed on, and the society expanded, discoveries became less and less frequent. Members often sat around talking of old exploits, rather than going out to seek new ones. The president of the society at the time decided that he would organize official races, in the hopes it would revive the adventurous spirit in members. The president presided over these races and chose the locations for the checkpoints. The early races were extremely popular with the members and drew many spectators, as well. In fact, the races became so popular that spectators begin asking if they could try their luck against the members. The president was hesitant, at first, but upon seeing the potential for new discovery and membership recruitment, he finally agreed. Soon after this decision, the president decided to retire. He announced that all future races would be run by an elected member of the Magellan Society and this member would serve as host until he, she, or it decided to step down. Today's races have come a long way from the old, members-only that were held on Earth. After the fall of Ming and the opening of the Magellan spacestation, races were held there, 2 spaces east of the LP. Next time you are looking for something to do on a Saturday night, come be part of the time-honored tradition that is the Magellan Cup race. |
