REAL LIFE NEWS: A TECHNOLOGICAL STEP TOO FARby HazedIt's hard to escape from the ubiquitous mobile phone, but one of the places blessedly free of the sound of raised voices saying, "Can you hear me now?" are airplanes. But that could be about to change. Singapore Airlines has just announced that it will allow wireless connections on its medium and long-haul flights early next year. That means text messages, Blackberrys and - oh noes! - cell phone calls. This horrific plan is part of a multi-million-dollar collaboration with in-flight connectivity provider OnAir to offer W-Fi internet access and other services on its flights. The airline is waiting to see how customers respond to the idea before making a final decision about whether to include mobile phone service in the plan. "Voice calls are a capability of the system and it's an option that we may open to customers in the future. At this point, a firm decision hasn't yet been made on that," said Singapore Airlines spokesman James Boyd. "There are a number of questions that will have to be explored as we continue to get feedback from our customers on how the system should be managed." Let us hope that the customers show some good sense and demand that mobiles be kept inactive during flights - otherwise we'll be plagued by people yelling into their phones, "Hello, I'm on the plane!" |
