REAL LIFE NEWS: LAWYERS WORRY ABOUT CORRUPTION

by Hazed

Lots of people think lawyers are sleazy. Now it turns out that the lawyers themselves think so too. A worldwide survey shows that in many countries, they think corruption has tainted the legal profession with more than one in five reportedly having been asked to take place in possibly shady transactions.

The survey was carried out by the International Bar Association, based in London. They asked 642 lawyers in 65 countries about corruption, and almost half of them say corruption does affect lawyers in their countries.

As you would expect, the results varied by region. In Australia and New Zealand, only 16% of lawyers considered that corruption was a problem. But it was more than 70% in Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

One in three of all the lawyers surveyed said that they had lost business to corrupt law firms or individuals.

In Pakistan, China and Guatemala, all of the respondents reported this fear. That's pretty damning - until you read the small print and realise that these countries had a particularly small sample size, with less than five responding in Pakistan and Guatemala, and 10 in China.

From the department of stating the obvious, the International Commission of Jurists' Guatemala staff direction said that corruption in the legal profession tends to be common in countries where organized crime and drug trafficking have a strong presence. Well, duh! Next: shocking reports that casinos are a hotbed of gambling!
