REAL LIFE NEWS: DEFEND US FROM DANGEROUS LAWN ORNAMENTSby HazedIn the last issue before we went off on our break, I told you about police in England scrambling to defend the locals against an escaped tiger - that turned out to be a toy. Now it's happened again - this time in Independence, Missouri. Police responded to an alligator sighting and rushed to a suburban pond, and took quick action to dispose of the unwanted visiting reptile by shooting at it. An officer shot the reptile twice in the head, on instructions from a conservation officer. (Wait a minute - you conserve something by shooting it in the head?) But both shots bounced off, and although alligator skin is tough, it's not bullet proof, so they realized something was wrong. A closer look showed that it was, in fact, a concrete lawn ornament. Apparently, the landowner had put the fake alligator in the weeds by the pond to keep children off his property. But a man had spotted it in the woods and thought it was real, so he'd called police. |
