REAL LIFE NEWS: WHEN EBOOKS GO BAD
by Hazed
I make ebooks as my job. There’s lots of different ways to do it, that give you varying amounts of control over the final product. I favor the down and dirty way: editing the HTML code and the data files directly, so I can determine exactly how the end product will be displayed.
But however it is produced, the most important part is the testing. Just like computer programming - test it, test it again, test it a third time.
So you can imagine the schadenfreude I felt when I read that J K Rowlings’ new book, the much-anticipated non-Harry Potter novel for grown-ups, came out with file formatting errors which made the ebook unreadable.
Whoops!
Just goes to show that big publishers are no more immune to screw-ups than small independent outfits.
