PRODUCT RECALL OF THE WEEK: INCENDIARY SUNSCREEN
by Hazed
If you’ve bought some Banana Boat sunscreen you might want to think twice before applying it to your skin - because some people who have used it have caught fire!
The spray-on product is being taken off the shelves because of reports that the lotion can ignite when it’s exposed to open flame.
A spokesman for Energizer Holdings said there had been five reports of people who caught fire after applying the product in the last year, four in the US and one in Canada.
Energizer’s statement said that the problem appears to be with UltraMist’s spray valve, which is over applying the product. As a result the lotion is taking longer to dry, which raises its flammability risk.
“If a consumer comes into contact with a flame or spark prior to complete drying of the product on the skin, there is a potential for the product to ignite,” the company said.
Wow. For a product meant to stop sunburn, that’s a pretty serious defect.
