REAL LIFE NEWS: SPACE FAILURES

Of course, Schiparelli is by no means the first space mission that went disastrously wrong, and it won’t be the last. A look back over the history of space travel shows numerous failures. A whole lot of hardware has been lost, and tragically some lives as well.
An informative list of eight of these failures has been published by the New Atlas website. It starts with the American attempt to get a satellite into orbit, the Vanguard project, which in 1957 was pipped to the post by the Russian Sputnik. At the end of the year, when it finally launched, the rocket exploded. Whoops!
The list includes moon landers and space stations, the Hubble space telescope and various Mars missions that went wrong. It’s a fascinating article that goes into great detail about the causes of the failures.
