REAL LIFE NEWS: A SMART TATTOO DETECTS YOUR ALCOHOL LEVEL
by Hazed
Now this sounds very useful… engineers have come up with a smart tattoo that will tell you how much you’ve had to drink.
The small device is worn on the skin and it detects alcohol levels in your sweat. It sends the info to your smart phone in just 8 minutes. That means anyone who wants to monitor their alcohol intake can do so without too much hassle. This could help to reduce incidences of drink-driving.
The device has been developed by a collaboration of nanoengineers and electrical and computing engineers at the University of California, San Diego. The biosensor patch, which looks like a temporary tattoo, is embedded with several flexible wireless components. One of these releases a chemical that stimulates perspiration on the skin below the patch; another detects changes in the electrical current flowing through this sweat, which allows the device to measure alcohol levels.
Previous devices which measured alcohol in sweat took 2-3 hours to get a reading, so the speed with which this device works is a real advancement.
Of course, it won’t be of any use if you’re so drunk you forget to check the reading…
