REAL LIFE NEWS: SELFIE DEATHS ARE ON THE INCREASE
by Hazed
I’ve talked about people who die while taking a selfie before, but a new report shows that the numbers are rising: since March 2014, 127 people have died and many more been injured in the pursuit of the perfect personal picture.
The study, called “Me, Myself and My Killfie: Characterizing and Preventing Selfie Deaths” found 15 selfie-related deaths in 2014, 39 in 2015 and 73 up to September 2016.
India is the country most prone to killer selfies: in total there have been 76 selfie-related deaths there. Mumbai police have had to classify certain areas as “no-selfie zones”.
The usual cause of the selfie deaths are people who fall off mountains or buildings. Watery deaths also feature, as do fatal encounters with trains.
In the US, three deaths occurred when people tried to snap a selfie while holding a weapon.
Males account for about three-quarters of selfie deaths, despite the fact that women take more selfies than men. This is because men are more prone to taking risky selfies.
Just one more way that using phones seems to turn people’s brains off!
